Exploring the legacy of this iconic German institution, our film crew traveled the world, meeting architects, artists, urban planners, doers and dreamers. Do the Bauhaus\u2019s social ideals and design principles still shape how we live today?

\nNew approaches to education and training, architecture, painting, dance and design were explored and developed at the Bauhaus. Its founder and director Walter Gropius attracted the leading creative figures of the era, including Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, Josef Albers and Gunta St\u00f6lzl. Today, Bauhaus is considered the birthplace of Modernism and has become a byword for sleek, functional design.

\nFounded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus school moved to Dessau in 1925 and then to Berlin, where it was forced to shut in 1933 after Hitler seized power. Most of its artists, architects and visionaries emigrated, fanning out and spreading the Bauhaus doctrine around the world.
\n
\nFilmmaker Lydia Ranke and her team traveled the world to make the three-part documentary bauhausWORLD. Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited cities such as Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Mexico City and Medell\u00edn, talking to experts from architects Norman Foster and Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska.

The art-style known as "Art Deco" has proved to be a catalyst and icon of the 1920s and 1930s. Noted for its geometric patterns, streamlined appearance, and evoking a feeling of efficiency, luxury, modernism, and futurism. Everything from architecture, fashion, automobiles, and railroads were affected by art deco's vast popularity. Art Deco in the 1930s would lead to another style known as Art or Streamline Moderne resulting in some of the finest streamlined locomotives and trains in the world. While Art Deco has since fallen out of style, it's influence could be found in mid 20th century minimalist and modernist art and eventually the modern day world of streamlined high speed trains. In this video I'll be going over how Art Deco managed to influence the world's railways and their design choices ranging from advertising and promotional material, locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure.

Art Nouveau was a highly decorative art movement started by the new middle-class, which established itself in cities throughout Europe and the United States at the turn of the century. It was a genuinely cosmopolitan project of modernity that existed in all sorts of media, forms, scales, and geographies. Everything from architecture, interior design, decorative arts, fashion and graphic design was influenced by this new art. It was literally new since the term Art Nouveau is a French word for "new art."

\nToday we're looking at this beautiful Art Deco apartment complex.
\nThis is what's left of \ud835\udc13\ud835\udc21\ud835\udc1e \ud835\udc0b\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1d\ud835\udc28.
\nThe 18,473 square foot complex was built in 1928.
\nIt has been sitting vacant & abandoned since 2007.
\nIn today's episode, we're venturing inside! We'll go up to the rooftop, down to the basement, we'll examine this ornate brickwork on the outside and the crackling, peeling lead paint on the inside. We'll take a look at vintage maps from the neighborhood, and we're going to hear first-hand accounts from people who lived here.
\n
\nWe are in the Dexter-Linwood neighborhood of Detroit, once a thriving, largely Jewish community. The Laredo was built in 1928. The building was designed by architectural firm Weidmaier & Gay, who also did a number of other apartment buildings in Detroit and Highland Park, many with these bold, Moorish-style accents. The project was bankrolled by one Henry Nussbaum.
\n
\nNot a lot is known about Henry Nussbaum. He was a Jewish immigrant. When he died, he was buried in Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit about 20 minutes north. We'll take a quick drive up there and pay a visit to his gravesite.
\nBefore he got involved in American real estate, Henry Nussbaum was a plumber. He was born in Austria in 1895, and he immigrated to the U.S. in 1919. He had a good career dealing plumbing products from the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company, which would go on to become American Standard and is still in business today.
\nWe're not sure if Henry was involved in any other apartment communities besides the Laredo, but we're pretty sure he continued in his plumbing business even after the Laredo was built in 1928.
\nHe died of cancer in 1947, at the age of 52.

\nWith works that exuded cool elegance and transgressive sensuality, Tamara de Lempicka (1894\u20131980) helped define Art Deco. Her paintings captured the glamour and vitality of postwar Paris and the cosmopolitan sheen of Hollywood celebrity. This exhibition \u2014 the first major museum retrospective of Lempicka in the United States \u2014 explores the artist\u2019s distinctive style and unconventional life through four major chapters. The more than 100 artworks on display range from her post-Cubist work in 1920s Paris to her most famous nudes and portraits to the melancholic still lifes and interiors of her final days in the United States and Mexico. Including an in-depth look at the artist\u2019s drawings and studies, this exhibition reveals the creative process behind her iconic paintings.
