\nThe story of Narcissus, most famously told by Ovid, is a tragedy that has fascinated artists for over 2,000 years. Surrealist artist Salvador Dal\u00ed set about painting a canvas in homage to the myth in the Spring of 1937, and took the completed work with him to meet the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, in London in 1938. Dal\u00ed had long held Freud in great esteem, his canvases often swarming with references to the psychoanalyst\u2019s ideas, and so the meeting was the culmination of a deep ambition.
\n
\nIn taking his painting 'Metamorphosis of Narcissus' with him to meet Freud, Dal\u00ed had hoped to engage the doctor in conversation about the myth and psychoanalytic concept of narcissism. But the meeting didn\u2019t go according to plan\u2026

This is one of series of 70+ short videos introducing ideas of art theory, history, criticism, practice, and teaching. They are intended for visual art students, from the first year through the MFA. Together they introduce a coherent, cross-referenced vocabulary of some of the central ideas of both history and practice, such as the sublime, religion, criticism, politics, media, science, skill, and representation. Each video is free-standing, and can be viewed on its own; some also form sequences. A fairly full list of the lectures is given at the beginning of each video.

\nAre these for everyone?
\nNothing is presupposed in any of these videos. If you're new to art, you should be able to watch all of them. At the same time, they are intended to raise the bar in undergraduate art education. The full set includes much more art theory than is normal in BA and BFA programs, and the videos are self-reflexive and self-critical throughout. Every judgment I discuss is open to question. There are videos here that ask whether art students should study art history at all, and videos that suggest reasons not to learn theory or concepts of art. There is also material here that is seldom taught even at graduate level, for example some remarks on how the traces of earlier kinds of teaching survive into the present, and material on the lack of good definitions of the BFA and MFA degrees. The idea is to let students understand all the conditions of their own education: how art is taught now, how it's taught in other places, how books of art history have nationalist perspectives, how masterpieces haven't always been valued, and where studio prompts and exercises come from (which are modernist, which are premodern).

\nPhilosophic issues
\nIt has been said that contemporary art is sufficiently pluralist so that it is effectively impossible to find a common vocabulary, or to define what counts as pertinent art theory.
\nPersonally speaking, I found it fascinating to choose the topics for this series, because it became necessary to make decisions about the number of topics, which topics can be usefully sketched in 20 minutes, and which topics are related to which others. (Initially there were exactly 56\u2014two sets of 28\u2014because at the School of the Art Institute, where these were made, the semesters are 14 weeks long, so the entire run of Concepts or History lectures could be done in a year. The current number of lectures is over 70.) It's relatively easy to name a couple dozen concepts and critics, but it is exceptionally difficult to figure out what shape the whole should take. It was a salutary exercise, because it helped me see that contemporary art is not a trackless domain of interrelated voices, but a language, or a language family, with patterns and affinities.

\nA brief history
\nI composed, researched, wrote, and recorded these during the Covid pandemic. Art and psychoanalysis have had a very long and intense relationship over the years, and it makes sense that these two fields would be drawn to one another. Critics have long looked at psychoanalysis as offering a sophisticated model of decoding images and fantasies. Artists have made productive use of ideas like the unconscious and the uncanny, and of course, are very concerned with the questions of self-expression and desire that are at the core of analysis.
\nOne figure who has gained quite a bit of attention in art lately for her ideas on all these things is Jamieson. Webster. Webster is an analyst and a teacher, and is among the founders of Pulsion, a new school for psychoanalysis here in New York City. She's also the author of essays for places including The New York Times and the New York Review of Books, as well as books of her own, including the Life and Death of Psychoanalysis from 2019 and Disorganization and Sex from 2022.
\nRecently Webster spoke with art critic and podcast co-host Ben Davis about the fresh uptick of interest in psychoanalysis among artists now, the uses and abuses of therapy in art, and her new pamphlet titled The Psychoanalyst and the Artist, where she writes about what analysts can learn from two artists in particular, the sculptor Louise Bourgeois and the painter Carroll Dunham.<\/p>\n \n

\nThe New York comic artist Art Spiegelman is visiting the Sigmund Freud Museum on the occasion of the comic-exhibition _Narrating Violence._ In conversation with Viennese psychoanalyst Ulrike Kadi, the Pulitzer Prize winner will talk about his work and the socio-political significance of comics, violence (representations) and the overlaps between comics and psychoanalysis.

\nArt Spiegelman is probably the most famous living comic author who created a \u201cwork of the century\u201d with _MAUS \u2013 A Survivor\u2019s Tale_ (1986 & 1991). In it, he tells the story of his father, who survived Auschwitz. By drawing the figures with animal heads, Spiegelman created a new approach to depicting the Shoah and the reality of the extermination camp. His work _In the Shadows of no Towers_ (2004) is also characterized by a reflexive examination of trauma and the power of (media) images.

\n\u201cThe story of the present is so interwoven with the story of the past. Comics are a great way to show this,\u201d explained Art Spiegelman in an interview in 2022. The ability of comics to use the means of defamiliarization to represent even the unspeakable is also of particular interest to psychoanalysis. Art Spiegelman and Ulrike Kadi will therefore also discuss the similarities and differences between comics and psychoanalysis.

\n*Art Spiegelman,* born 1948, studied cartooning in high school and began drawing professionally at age 16. He studied art and philosophy at Harpur College, New York State, before becoming part of the underground comix subculture of the 60s and 70s. In 1977, he published the first edition of _Breakdowns_ (the second expanded edition came out in 2008). Together with his wife, Fran\u00e7oise Mouly, he co-founded and edited from 1980 to 1991 the acclaimed avant-garde comics magazine _RAW_ where _MAUS_ was originally serialized. They also edited several comic anthologies for children.

\n_MAUS_ received several awards including the Pulitzer Prize, the Angoul\u00eame International Comics Festival Best Foreign Album Award, the Eisner Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction. _Meta Maus,_ about why he wrote _MAUS,_ came out in 2011. _In the Shadows of No Towers,_ his account of the events of aftermath of September 11th, was a national bestseller in the United States. Spiegelman has received several awards in the US and abroad, and was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2015.
