This is one of series of 70+ short videos introducing ideas of art theory, history, criticism, practice, and teaching. They are intended for visual art students, from the first year through the MFA. Together they introduce a coherent, cross-referenced vocabulary of some of the central ideas of both history and practice, such as the sublime, religion, criticism, politics, media, science, skill, and representation. Each video is free-standing, and can be viewed on its own; some also form sequences. A fairly full list of the lectures is given at the beginning of each video.

\nAre these for everyone?
\nNothing is presupposed in any of these videos. If you're new to art, you should be able to watch all of them. At the same time, they are intended to raise the bar in undergraduate art education. The full set includes much more art theory than is normal in BA and BFA programs, and the videos are self-reflexive and self-critical throughout. Every judgment I discuss is open to question. There are videos here that ask whether art students should study art history at all, and videos that suggest reasons not to learn theory or concepts of art. There is also material here that is seldom taught even at graduate level, for example some remarks on how the traces of earlier kinds of teaching survive into the present, and material on the lack of good definitions of the BFA and MFA degrees. The idea is to let students understand all the conditions of their own education: how art is taught now, how it's taught in other places, how books of art history have nationalist perspectives, how masterpieces haven't always been valued, and where studio prompts and exercises come from (which are modernist, which are premodern).

\nPhilosophic issues
\nIt has been said that contemporary art is sufficiently pluralist so that it is effectively impossible to find a common vocabulary, or to define what counts as pertinent art theory.
\nPersonally speaking, I found it fascinating to choose the topics for this series, because it became necessary to make decisions about the number of topics, which topics can be usefully sketched in 20 minutes, and which topics are related to which others. (Initially there were exactly 56\u2014two sets of 28\u2014because at the School of the Art Institute, where these were made, the semesters are 14 weeks long, so the entire run of Concepts or History lectures could be done in a year. The current number of lectures is over 70.) It's relatively easy to name a couple dozen concepts and critics, but it is exceptionally difficult to figure out what shape the whole should take. It was a salutary exercise, because it helped me see that contemporary art is not a trackless domain of interrelated voices, but a language, or a language family, with patterns and affinities.

\nA brief history
\nI composed, researched, wrote, and recorded these during the Covid pandemic. Psychoanalysis is sometimes thought of as a discipline that is focussed solely on the individual and biography. Ever since Freud's study of Leonardo Da Vinci, psychoanalytic readings of art have often emphasised the role of the author and his or her unconscious desires above all other factors. We see this especially in the history of scholarship on Louise Bourgeois, whose work is currently on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh under the auspices of ARTIST ROOMS, and is also on view at The Fruitmarket Gallery until 23 February. Bourgeois studies have often been inseparable from her own interest in psychoanalysis, but also from questions about her biography and her own role in authoring it. This workshop, following on from the highly successful Future Bourgeois symposium at SNGMA\/The Fruitmarket Gallery on 7 February, will take a wider view, considering how we can use psychoanalysis to interpret art of all kinds without producing a psychobiography of the artist.
\n
\nOne key question will be whether psychoanalytic methods can help us to explain aesthetic experiences. As Stephen Frosh has argued, with its fluid model of 'self' and 'other', psychoanalysis provides arguably the most sophisticated model of our relations with the outside world. Might it help us to understand our reactions to works of art, or does recent research into 'neuroaesthetics' and other fields invalidate it? We will also ask whether psychoanalysis might help us to research the social history of the arts. There are certainly many studies that have used its methods for this purpose. For example, researchers who have used psychoanalytic ideas to analyse the role of ideology in cinema and the mass media (e.g. Slavoj Zizek and the 'Screen' journal in the 1970s & 80s), recent work on the psychoanalysis of art under conditions of war and other traumatic social situations (e.g. Mignon Nixon and Griselda Pollock), and writers who have used psychoanalytic concepts to analyse art in post-colonial contexts (e.g. Hal Foster on Primitivism, Gelder and Jacobs on the 'postcolonial uncanny' in Australian literature). How does psychoanalysis tell us about 'the social', and art's place in it? These are just some of the questions that will be raised in this workshop aimed at postgraduates and researchers, featuring a panel debate and short presentations on work in progress in the field.

Art and psychoanalysis have had a very long and intense relationship over the years, and it makes sense that these two fields would be drawn to one another. Critics have long looked at psychoanalysis as offering a sophisticated model of decoding images and fantasies. Artists have made productive use of ideas like the unconscious and the uncanny, and of course, are very concerned with the questions of self-expression and desire that are at the core of analysis.
\nOne figure who has gained quite a bit of attention in art lately for her ideas on all these things is Jamieson. Webster. Webster is an analyst and a teacher, and is among the founders of Pulsion, a new school for psychoanalysis here in New York City. She's also the author of essays for places including The New York Times and the New York Review of Books, as well as books of her own, including the Life and Death of Psychoanalysis from 2019 and Disorganization and Sex from 2022.
\nRecently Webster spoke with art critic and podcast co-host Ben Davis about the fresh uptick of interest in psychoanalysis among artists now, the uses and abuses of therapy in art, and her new pamphlet titled The Psychoanalyst and the Artist, where she writes about what analysts can learn from two artists in particular, the sculptor Louise Bourgeois and the painter Carroll Dunham.<\/p>\n \n
