Born in Tel Aviv (and of Israeli and British nationality), Bracha L. Ettinger received her Ph.D. in Aesthetics of Art from the University of Paris VIII, a D.E.A. in Psychoanalysis from the University of Paris VII, and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is the Marcel Duchamp Professor of Psychoanalysis and Art at the Media & Communications Division, European Graduate School (EGS), Saas-Fee. She lives in Paris.

Bracha L. Ettinger presents an original theoretical exploration of shared affect and emergent expression, across the thresholds of identity and memory. Ettinger works through Lacan's late works, the anti-Oedipal perspectives of Deleuze and Guattari, as well as object-relations theory to critique the phallocentrism of mainstream Lacanian theory and to rethink the masculine-feminine opposition. She replaces the phallic structure with a dimension of emergence, where objects, images, and meanings are glimpsed in their incipiency, before they are differentiated. This is the matrixial realm, a shareable, psychic dimension that underlies the individual unconscious and experience. Professor Ettinger is author of several books and more than seventy psychoanalytical essays on what she has named matrixial trans-subjectivity.

Psychoanalysis is sometimes thought of as a discipline that is focussed solely on the individual and biography. Ever since Freud's study of Leonardo Da Vinci, psychoanalytic readings of art have often emphasised the role of the author and his or her unconscious desires above all other factors. We see this especially in the history of scholarship on Louise Bourgeois, whose work is currently on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh under the auspices of ARTIST ROOMS, and is also on view at The Fruitmarket Gallery until 23 February. Bourgeois studies have often been inseparable from her own interest in psychoanalysis, but also from questions about her biography and her own role in authoring it. This workshop, following on from the highly successful Future Bourgeois symposium at SNGMA/The Fruitmarket Gallery on 7 February, will take a wider view, considering how we can use psychoanalysis to interpret art of all kinds without producing a psychobiography of the artist.

One key question will be whether psychoanalytic methods can help us to explain aesthetic experiences. As Stephen Frosh has argued, with its fluid model of 'self' and 'other', psychoanalysis provides arguably the most sophisticated model of our relations with the outside world. Might it help us to understand our reactions to works of art, or does recent research into 'neuroaesthetics' and other fields invalidate it? We will also ask whether psychoanalysis might help us to research the social history of the arts. There are certainly many studies that have used its methods for this purpose. For example, researchers who have used psychoanalytic ideas to analyse the role of ideology in cinema and the mass media (e.g. Slavoj Zizek and the 'Screen' journal in the 1970s & 80s), recent work on the psychoanalysis of art under conditions of war and other traumatic social situations (e.g. Mignon Nixon and Griselda Pollock), and writers who have used psychoanalytic concepts to analyse art in post-colonial contexts (e.g. Hal Foster on Primitivism, Gelder and Jacobs on the 'postcolonial uncanny' in Australian literature). How does psychoanalysis tell us about 'the social', and art's place in it? These are just some of the questions that will be raised in this workshop aimed at postgraduates and researchers, featuring a panel debate and short presentations on work in progress in the field.

This is one of series of 70+ short videos introducing ideas of art theory, history, criticism, practice, and teaching. They are intended for visual art students, from the first year through the MFA. Together they introduce a coherent, cross-referenced vocabulary of some of the central ideas of both history and practice, such as the sublime, religion, criticism, politics, media, science, skill, and representation. Each video is free-standing, and can be viewed on its own; some also form sequences. A fairly full list of the lectures is given at the beginning of each video.

Are these for everyone?
Nothing is presupposed in any of these videos. If you're new to art, you should be able to watch all of them. At the same time, they are intended to raise the bar in undergraduate art education. The full set includes much more art theory than is normal in BA and BFA programs, and the videos are self-reflexive and self-critical throughout. Every judgment I discuss is open to question. There are videos here that ask whether art students should study art history at all, and videos that suggest reasons not to learn theory or concepts of art. There is also material here that is seldom taught even at graduate level, for example some remarks on how the traces of earlier kinds of teaching survive into the present, and material on the lack of good definitions of the BFA and MFA degrees. The idea is to let students understand all the conditions of their own education: how art is taught now, how it's taught in other places, how books of art history have nationalist perspectives, how masterpieces haven't always been valued, and where studio prompts and exercises come from (which are modernist, which are premodern).

Please leave comments and questions here. I'd especially like to hear about texts that you might assign to go with these lectures, class exercises (including drawing execerises) that could accompany them, and projects that arise from them. Please don't post on errors, unless they're major. It took a lot of work to make these, and I won't be revising them.
I am contemplating a teacher's guide, in print form, to go with these. If anyone is interested in that, or has ideas for it, let me know.

I hope these can be a resource for teaching and learning, but I also hope this series can grow, both in the comments here and also with the addition of videos made by other people. Philosophic issues
It has been said that contemporary art is sufficiently pluralist so that it is effectively impossible to find a common vocabulary, or to define what counts as pertinent art theory.
Personally speaking, I found it fascinating to choose the topics for this series, because it became necessary to make decisions about the number of topics, which topics can be usefully sketched in 20 minutes, and which topics are related to which others. (Initially there were exactly 56—two sets of 28—because at the School of the Art Institute, where these were made, the semesters are 14 weeks long, so the entire run of Concepts or History lectures could be done in a year. The current number of lectures is over 70.) It's relatively easy to name a couple dozen concepts and critics, but it is exceptionally difficult to figure out what shape the whole should take. It was a salutary exercise, because it helped me see that contemporary art is not a trackless domain of interrelated voices, but a language, or a language family, with patterns and affinities.

A brief history
I composed, researched, wrote, and recorded these during the Covid pandemic. In 2020 they were used by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in paid online seminars to raise money for African-American students. In 2020-21, SAIC began experimenting with requiring them in its first-year program. At that point I decided they should be open and free for everyone.

Val Denham, born 14.11.1957 in Yorkshire is the kind of artist you’d normally expect to learn about only after their passing, when crates of wonderful obsessively detailed artworks and diaries would be revealed Darger-like to an unsuspecting public. Because unlike the majority of her generation of UK artists, neither her interest (nor her talent!) is first and foremost in self-promotion but in the obsessive creation of her art, the expression of her uniquely personal vision, her obsessions, her manias, her struggles and her life-path. Apart from creating richly detailed works which deal with personal themes like her OCD, gender dysphoria and transgender issues, she is also an accomplished portrait artist. Her style is easily identifiable even though she has never limited herself to one particular mode of expression only, she is equally versatile in life-like figurative art as in abstract forms. Two volumes of her art and thoughts have been published by Timeless Editions out of Toulouse in 2012 and 2015 respectively and met with wide approval. “You begin with the relation between Right and Might. There can be no doubt that that is the correct starting-point for our investigation. But may I replace the word ‘might’ by the balder and harsher word ‘violence’? Today right and violence appear to us as antitheses. It can easily be shown, however, that the one has developed out of the other.” He goes on to state, "Such, then, was the original state of things: domination by whoever had the greater might—domination by brute violence or by violence supported by intellect. As we know, this régime was altered in the course of evolution. There was a path that led from violence to right or law. What was that path? It is my belief that there was only one: the path which led by way of the fact that the superior strength of a single individual could be rivalled by the union of several weak ones. ‘L’union fait la force.’ Violence could be broken by union, and the power of those who were united now represented law in contrast to the violence of the single individual. Thus we see that right is the might of a community. It is still violence, ready to be directed against any individual who resists it; it works by the same methods and follows the same purposes. The only real difference lies in the fact that what prevails is no longer the violence of an individual but that of a community. But in order that the transition from violence to this new right or justice may be effected, one psychological condition must be fulfilled. The union of the majority must be a stable and lasting one. If it were only brought about for the purpose of combating a single dominant individual and were dissolved after his defeat, nothing would have been accomplished. The next person who thought himself superior in strength would once more seek to set up a dominion by violence and the game would be repeated ad infinitum. The community must be maintained permanently, must be organized, must draw up regulations to anticipate the risk of rebellion and must institute authorities to see that those regulations—the laws—are respected and to superintend the execution of legal acts of violence. The recognition of a community of interests such as these leads to the growth of emotional ties between the members of a united group of people—communal feelings which are the true source of its strength."
