The three-part documentary bauhausWORLD marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Germany’s best-known art, architecture and design school, the Bauhaus. Exploring the legacy of this iconic German institution, our film crew traveled the world, meeting architects, artists, urban planners, doers and dreamers. Do the Bauhaus’s social ideals and design principles still shape how we live today?

New approaches to education and training, architecture, painting, dance and design were explored and developed at the Bauhaus. Its founder and director Walter Gropius attracted the leading creative figures of the era, including Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, Josef Albers and Gunta Stölzl. Today, Bauhaus is considered the birthplace of Modernism and has become a byword for sleek, functional design.

Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus school moved to Dessau in 1925 and then to Berlin, where it was forced to shut in 1933 after Hitler seized power. Most of its artists, architects and visionaries emigrated, fanning out and spreading the Bauhaus doctrine around the world.

Filmmaker Lydia Ranke and her team traveled the world to make the three-part documentary bauhausWORLD. Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited cities such as Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Mexico City and Medellín, talking to experts from architects Norman Foster and Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska.

"The Code" is the first part of bauhausWORLD. The search for the secret of Bauhaus’s enduring success leads all the way to Japan - a journey illustrating how the forced closure of the school that drove the movement into exile served to spread its philosophy around the world.

The art-style known as "Art Deco" has proved to be a catalyst and icon of the 1920s and 1930s. Noted for its geometric patterns, streamlined appearance, and evoking a feeling of efficiency, luxury, modernism, and futurism. Everything from architecture, fashion, automobiles, and railroads were affected by art deco's vast popularity. Art Deco in the 1930s would lead to another style known as Art or Streamline Moderne resulting in some of the finest streamlined locomotives and trains in the world. While Art Deco has since fallen out of style, it's influence could be found in mid 20th century minimalist and modernist art and eventually the modern day world of streamlined high speed trains. In this video I'll be going over how Art Deco managed to influence the world's railways and their design choices ranging from advertising and promotional material, locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure.

Art Nouveau was a highly decorative art movement started by the new middle-class, which established itself in cities throughout Europe and the United States at the turn of the century. It was a genuinely cosmopolitan project of modernity that existed in all sorts of media, forms, scales, and geographies. Everything from architecture, interior design, decorative arts, fashion and graphic design was influenced by this new art. It was literally new since the term Art Nouveau is a French word for "new art."

These videos were made in 2020 as a desperate COVID-era attempt to help keep students engaged in learning as in-person teaching stopped. With no support, no resources, a ridiculous "production schedule," and no idea they would become a sort of permanent record of the time, I just threw them at YouTube. The students mostly didn't watch them, but lots of others did, and that continues to amaze me. I decided to leave them up for anyone who is just curious about design.

This was the FIRST lecture recorded, intended for the three students who needed to get home fast. It is rough, to say the least..

Learn about the life of Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka in this Tamara de Lempicka biography. The artist Tamara de Lempicka led an extraordinary life. Imagine Paris in the 1920’s, the Roaring Twenties. It is the height of the jazz age, Paris is the centre of modernism in art and design and after the horrors of the 1st World War, society is changing fast. It is more egalitarian and the French along with everyone else, is ready to party. Enter a young Polish refugee from Russia, a modern woman, a larger-than-life character, a libertine and social climber destined to make her mark. Her paintings, Cubist inspired, combined the traditions of Ingres and Caravaggio with lavish decoration and the style and sophistication of her sitters. This artist, who named herself Tamara de Lempicka, epitomised the glamourous era of Art Deco during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Born in Warsaw in 1898 as Tamara Rozalia Gurwik-Gorska , Tamara de Lempicka painted her most famous work, Autoportrait - Girl in the Green Bugatti in 1927. She died in Mexico in 1980.

#1 Secession: When Gustav Klimt and a number of other artists left the conservative Künstlerhaus in 1897, they needed new artistic lodgings. One year later, they found what they were looking for in the vicinity of Vienna's Naschmarkt. Joseph Maria Olbrich had completed the Vienna Secession here in 1898 – a highly contentious building at the time.

#2 Strudelhof Stairway (Strudelhofstiege): In the 9th Viennese district, the Strudlhof Stairway connects Strudlhofgasse with Liechtensteinstrasse. Far beyond this practical purpose, the stairway is above all known for being an important structure of Viennese Art Nouveau.

#3 High Bridge (Hohe Brücke): Admittedly, the Hohe Brücke is not one of the city's best known sights. But in terms of Art Nouveau, it is very important structure in Vienna. The first documented origins of a bridge at this location date back to the year 1295. Over the centuries, various bridges replaced one another. The Hohe Brücke in its current form dates to 1904.

#4 Anker Clock: Our next Art Nouveau structure is also a bridge, but one that became famous for being a clock. This unusual transformation has served as a link between two buildings of the former insurance company "Der Anker" since December 1914. The Anker Clock designed by Franz Matsch is famous not for ticking exactly like a Swiss timepiece but for its Art Nouveau design and for the 12 historic figures.

#5 Klimt Villa: Visually, the Klimt Villa has little to do with Art Nouveau. However, as Gustav Klimt's final place of work, that makes it even more important for this period. Klimt used this villa in the 13th Viennese district as a studio from 1911 until his death in 1918.

#6 Café Rüdigerhof: The Rüdigerhof owes its name to Field Marshal Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg and its appearance to the architect Oskar Marmorek. This student of Otto Wagner had the Rüdigerhof built in 1902 and it became an important Art Nouveau building with its many typical designs and decorations.

#7 Zum weißen Engel Pharmacy: A pharmacy as a tourist attraction? Certainly, if you're looking for traces of Art Nouveau in Vienna! The story of the Angel Pharmacy reaches back into the 16th century. In 1902, after several relocations, the pharmacy moved into its present home in a typical Art Nouveau building that is still important today.
